Interpretations of Lessness (1998)
Personnel:
Andy Laster’s Lessness:
- Andy Laster – baritone saxophone
- Erik Friedlander – cello
- Kenny Wollesen – drums
- Cuong Vu - trumpet
Description:
A chamber-jazz suite inspired by Samuel Beckett's short prose work. Laster establishes a richly appealing sound world, catching something of Beckett's rhythms, colors, sadness, and obtuse, oddly-vaudevillian humor. 20-bit recording.
Press:
Samuel Beckett’s “Lessness,” with its deceptively random language and succinct ebb tie wistfulness, was the inspiration for the newest band by Andy Laster, a saxophonist doubling on alto and baritone, who writes a sort of cleanly mapped, salon-style music for jazz improvisers. A recent CD of the quartet, “Interpretations of Lessness”… is one of the recent gems of the downtown improvising scene.
